Morning Musings: Romans 15:2

“Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.”  (ESV)

The goal here is not to become doormats, but to practice love for one another.  We are not looking to justify every irritating whim and warped conviction of those around us.  Speaking more directly to the call of our culture, this is definitely not talking about tolerating a habit or practice that is clearly sinful on the part of a fellow follower of Christ.

Rather, in context, what Paul is calling us to here is to to handle with grace the convictions and beliefs of those believers who are living with a limited application of their freedom in Christ because of an opinion on a matter that, while not necessarily unwise, is itself unnecessary.  They have declared something to be sin that is not in fact sin.  Until they grow to understand the full extent of their freedom, we should bear with them with patience, creating space for their convictions all while calling them gently to broaden their understanding of the gift they have available to them.

Love must be the lead in this or else we needlessly sow division and disunity in the body.  Part of loving one another in the body of Christ means bearing with the quirks and spiritual weaknesses of one another as we all work together with the Spirit’s help to become more like Jesus and advance His kingdom.
