Digging in Deeper: 1 Timothy 6:10

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Fridays on here are fun, but they’re also a challenge. They’re fun because I take time to write about things that are purely interests for me—thus you get lots of reviews of superhero movies and series. It’s also a challenge, though, because unlike the other four days of the week, I don’t necessarily know what I’m going to write about very far ahead of time. I have more than once gotten to Thursday evening actively still wondering what was going to be on tap for the next day. That was the case this week, in fact. At least it was until my sports fanatic son sent me a note about a sports betting ring involving a bunch of college basketball players being broken up this week. We talked about sports betting a few weeks ago, but here we are again because this was one I just couldn’t ignore.

Digging in Deeper: Mark 16:5-8

“When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed. ‘Don’t be alarmed,’ he told them. ‘You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they put him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.”’ They went out and ran from the tomb,  because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone, since they were afraid.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Most streaming services aim to have at least one series that defines them. Hopefully they manage to land more than one, but they want—they need—to have something that proves to be enough of a cultural phenomenon that subscribers will sign up for the service just to be able to watch that. For Netflix, that series is indisputably Stranger Things. After much hype and anticipation, the final season is out in total, I’ve finished watching it, and we’re going to talk about it.

Digging in Deeper: Romans 15:1-3

“Now we who are strong have an obligation to bear the weaknesses of those without strength, and not to please ourselves. Each one of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For even Christ did not please himself. On the contrary, as it is written, ‘The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.'” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Welcome back! After a lovely break to spend some time reflecting on the season of Advent together, and couple of weeks off from writing entirely, it’s time to turn our attention back to Romans and finish our journey there. Let’s get going! There is a personality type that is driven to please others. These folks think often about what the people around them might need, and are willing to bend over backwards in order to help them get it. Now, when these folks are out of balance, they can become doormats who let the world just walk all over them, but when their value is properly rooted in Christ, they can be powerful servants, extending the blessings of the love of Christ to those around them with near boundless energy and care. As much as this is a personality type, though, as followers of Jesus, all of us are called to this to a certain extent. Let’s talk about pleasing others and the example of Jesus.

Reflections on a Life Well Lived

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.’” (CSB – Read the chapter)

This won’t be the next expected entry in our Advent journey. Some recent news has prompted a temporary change in direction.

All kinds of people come and go in your life. Most of them don’t make any kind of an impact on you, nor you on them. Some last a little longer. But there are a few who last. Even when you don’t see them often, they’re still there. The impact they have on you resonates all the way down to your soul. I’ve had a few of these folks over the course of my life. I recently learned that I have one fewer. The world is poorer for it. Let me tell you a bit about Don Ross.

Advent Reflections: Romans 11:33-12:1

“Oh, the depths of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments and untraceable his ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?’ And ‘who has ever given to God, that he should be repaid?’ For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.” (CSB – Read the chapter here and here)

Christmas is a time for giving gifts. That has been the tradition at least in the West for hundreds of years. And how interesting it is that even as Christmas has been thoroughly secularized and commercialized by our culture, stripping away almost everything that saw to the creation of the holiday in the first place, gift giving has remained. I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, whenever we got a gift we had to write a thank you note. It’s a practice we have instilled in our kids as well. When you receive a gift, it is right and proper to respond in some way to demonstrate your gratitude. Well, the gift that sparked all the gift giving we still celebrate today was the gift of Jesus. It is only right that we respond to this gift. Let’s talk about how.
