Morning Musing: 1 Corinthians 7:2

“But because sexual immorality is so common, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman should have sexual relations with her own husband.”‬‬ (CSB – Read the chapter)

The word “sexual” appears three times in that verse, so I suspect that if you’ve read at least this far I have your attention and will continue to have it until either I offend you or else I toe what you assume to be my party line too hard. Our culture is talking about sex. A lot. We should be too. So, let’s do it.

Digging in Deeper: 1 Corinthians 6:18

“Flee sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body.”‬‬ (CSB – Read the chapter)

I have a pine tree next to my driveway which, if it falls, will land right on my house. It wouldn’t be a glancing blow either. As the tree guy I met with the other day told me, it would slam into the roof line, probably snap off there, the top part would roll down the rest of the roof and land in the front yard, and the main trunk would slice through the brick exterior right through our eight-year-old’s bedroom and into our garage, totaling our fairly recently paid-off minivan. In other words, it would be catastrophic.

Morning Musing: 1 Corinthians 2:9

“But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’–” (ESV – Read the chapter)

I love this verse. Here’s how good our God is: We cannot even imagine all the good things he has planned for us. We cannot even fathom them. Some of them, perhaps, have not even been invented yet. And God is prepared for them. Read the rest…

Morning Musing: 1 Corinthians 4:3-4

“But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.” (ESV – Read the chapter)

“You can’t judge me!” may be one of the premier slogans of modern, western culture. A hundred years ago, what the people around you thought mattered a great deal. In many cultures around the world today this is still the case. An individual’s identity comes primarily from their social structure. In modern American culture, we are taught to place a high value on choosing a path that explicitly rejects and even makes a mockery of the social order in which we live. The bravest souls are the ones who take what’s expected of them and throw it in the trash to be “true to themselves” just like everybody else…

Morning Musings: 1 Corinthians 15:35-36

“But someone will ask, ‘How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?’ You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.” (ESV – Read the chapter)

The whole idea of the resurrection is a big one. It’s a huge one. It’s beyond what we can really understand. We get resuscitation. We get reanimation. The latter is a pretty popular pop culture genre right now. But resurrection? That’s something new. At least, it was in first century Corinth. So, naturally, people who were culturally trained to be skeptical of theologies and philosophies that seemed to glorify the material over the spiritual as the Christian doctrine of the resurrection seemed to do began to ask some hard questions.
