Morning Musing: Psalm 30:5

“For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.”‬‬ (ESV – Read the chapter)

Have you ever had something done to you that made you mad and you stayed mad for a good long while? It was bad enough that you just stewed over it…for days…weeks even? Or maybe flip that situation around: Have you ever done something that made someone else mad and they stayed mad at you for a long time? Have you ever felt like this other person was God? It’s awful living with someone who’s made at you. Fortunately, anger has a shelf life. Let me explain what I mean.

Digging in Deeper: 2 Samuel 16:10-11

“But the king said, ‘What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the Lord has said to him, “Curse David,” who then shall say, “Why have you done so?”’ And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, ‘Behold, my own son seeks my life; how much more now may this Benjaminite! Leave him alone, and let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.’” (CSB – Read the chapter)‬‬

How do you respond when you’ve been cursed? Let’s broaden that out: How do you respond to a perceived insult? Do you immediately seek to respond in kind? Do you nurse a grudge that eventually becomes a sullen hatred? Do you begin plotting how you will get your revenge at some point in the future? Being insulted is tough. It’s even tougher when the person insulting you is someone over whom you have some measure of authority. That’s what David experienced. What would you do? Read the rest…

Morning Musing: 2 Samuel 13:21

“When King David heard about all these things, he was furious.”  (CSB – Read the chapter)‬‬

We live in a rage culture today, don’t we? With the echo chamber effect created by social media, the smallest offense can get all whipped up into a senseless frenzy. Politicians seem to campaign with the intent of getting their supporters angry. After all, if they’re angry, they’re more likely to be motivated to go out and do something about their anger like vote. But here’s a question that we don’t seem to stop and think about nearly as often as we probably should: Is all this anger actually solving any problems? Read the rest…

Digging in Deeper: 2 Samuel 6:7-9

“And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day. And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, ‘How can the ark of the Lord come to me?'” (ESV – Read the chapter)‬‬

Have you ever set out to do what you were convinced was the right thing only to have it blow up in your face? Odds are, if you’ve experienced this, it only served to feed your willingness to buy into the truth of the cynical proverb, “No good deed goes unpunished.” In this moment, David would have understood how you felt. Digging in Deeper: 1 Samuel 23:12

“Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the Lord said, “They will surrender you.””  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Have you ever done something good only to have it blow up in your face? Have you ever given of yourself somehow to help someone else only to have them either throw it back in your face or else stab you in the back later? There’s an old adage that one good turn deserves another, but more often life seems to work out by way of a more cynical adage: No good deed goes unpunished. Read the rest…
