Advent Reflections: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

We’ve all been there before: hurting and in need of comfort. That’s never a fun place to be. In fact, we’ll often do just about anything we can to avoid it. And, when it comes to us anyway, we are often equally committed to getting out of it. Where do you go when you are in need of comfort? The season of Advent is a time when hurts from our past can feel a bit heavier than usual. Fortunately, it is also the season when God’s comfort became real in a way no one has ever experienced before. Let’s talk about finding comfort and the purpose of God’s comfort.

Morning Musing: 2 Samuel 24:1

“The Lord’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say: ‘Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.'”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

This is a really uncomfortable chapter. It raises a couple of really hard questions. I’ll treat them as they come starting with this one: Why would the Lord cause David to do something for which He then punished him? How is that just or fair or right or good or whatever other adjective you want to throw in there?

Morning Musings: Ezekiel 11:19-20

“And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them.  I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them.  And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

This is one of the great promises of God in the Old Testament.  Apart from Christ, people lack both the will and the ability to pursue a relationship with God.  It’s not just that we want to, but can’t, or even that we are able, but don’t really want it.  We couldn’t do it even if our heart desired it. Morning Musings: Colossians 1:15-20

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.  For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him.  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  And he is the head of the body, the church.  He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.  For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

This is one of the most exalted pictures of Jesus in all of the Scriptures.  It is a good reminder that the Jesus we serve and whose birth we will celebrate this next month is not just our friend, He is also our Lord.  Today we often see such an emphasis on Jesus as our friend and our personal Savior who knows us intimately that we lose sight of His glory.
