A week ago, I was invited to share a devotional thought with our local high school football team. For something a little different today, here’s some of what I had to say.

Character Counts 

Hey guys! Thanks for letting me have a few minutes with you this afternoon. I know there’s food to be enjoyed and football to be played, so I want to quickly do three things. I want to ask you a question, I want to tell you a couple of stories, and I want to talk with you for just a second about what they might mean for us.

Digging in Deeper: Genesis 3:8-10

“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ And he said, ‘I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.'” (CSB – Read the chapter)

It’s always interesting to see which things capture the cultural imagination and which don’t. Sometimes something will happen that seems like it should be shocking only for it not to move the cultural needle at all. Other times, something that feels like it shouldn’t gain any attention because the culture has moved on from it suddenly grabs everyone’s attention for a few days and absolutely will not let go. This second sort of thing happened a few days ago. The chatter about it has finally died down a bit, but for a few days there it was intense. And comical. Let’s chat for a few minutes today about Coldplay concerts and unfaithful spouses.

Morning Musings: 1 Chronicles 11:9

“And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.”  (ESV)

If we want to be great, this is how it’s done.  There are other ways to be called great by the world.  Amass enough money and you’ll be called great.  Attain to a certain media status and you’ll have followers.  Acquire sufficient power and your name will be celebrated in the streets.  But that greatness won’t last.  Lose the money, the followers, or the power and you’ll be nothing.  As Coldplay sings in their hit “Viva la Vida,” you’ll sweep the streets you used to own.   Read the rest…
