Morning Musing: Exodus 32:2-6

“Aaron replied to them, ‘Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters and bring them to me.’ So all the people took off the gold rings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaon. He took the gold from them, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it into an image of a calf. Then they said, ‘Israel, these are your gods, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’ When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of it and made an announcement: ‘There will be a festival to the Lord tomorrow.’ Early the next morning they arose, offered burnt offerings, and presented fellowship offerings. The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to party.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Have you ever been given a set of instructions you didn’t properly understand? The result is often that you do the wrong thing without realizing it. Maybe you do something that falls more in line with a previous understanding than the one you didn’t quite get this time. Either at, your doing the wrong thing is the result. While Moses was up on the mountain, after the people had agreed to play by God’s rules, the first thing they did was the wrong thing. Worse yet, they were led into it. Let’s talk about what’s going on here, and making sure we understand God properly.

Morning Musing: 1 Samuel 18:5-9

David marched out with the army and was successful in everything Saul sent him to do. Saul put him in command of the fighting men, which pleased all the people and Saul’s servants as well. As the troops were coming back, when David was returning from killing the Philistine, the women came out from all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul, singing and dancing with tambourines, with shouts of joy, and with three-stringed instruments. As they danced, the women sang, ‘Saul has killed his thousands, but David his tens of thousands.’ Saul was furious and resented this song. ‘They credited tens of thousands to David,’ he complained, ‘but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom?’ So Saul watched David jealously from that day forward.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

When you are a professional “God-botherer,” as I am sometimes called, you never know when God is going to bother back with a message that needs to be shared. Sometimes it’s just for one person. Sometimes it’s for a whole community. Sometimes it’s for a specific group in a community. This one fits in that last category. Still, though, give this one a read because there just might be something in this you need to hear too. There is a group of individuals in my community who have been through the wringer lately. This post is just a reminder to them that what they do matters. I won’t pull back the curtain on who they are, but when they read this, I suspect they’ll know. Let’s talk about David and work that nobody appreciates.

Digging in Deeper: A Special Birthday Wish

“Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. Give her the reward of her labor, and let her works praise her at the city gates.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

First, as a matter of business, the schedule for the next month is going to be a bit topsy-turvy. My family will have the chance to be out of town for a couple of short stints, I’ll be gone an entire week chaperoning a camp, and in the next five weeks, I’m only preaching three times because of pre-scheduled guest speakers. Some days I’ll get blogs posted, some days I won’t. Some days we’ll be in Exodus as scheduled, some days we won’t. Next week, for instance, I probably won’t post anything until Friday, if that. The summer schedule is in full swing for us, and I’m going to do my best to put my attention where it needs to be most…which won’t always be here. Fear not, though, come August things will settle back down into our more normal rhythm. Now to the task at hand…

I’ve gotten started at a new church as pastor twice in my life. Both times there were a handful of people the group serving as ambassadors for us insisted we absolutely had to meet right away. In both cases these folks were the recognized spiritual giants of the congregation. When we were getting started here in Oakboro, one of those individuals was Peggy Carey. We said, “See you later,” to her just a few weeks ago. There was another, though, who the search team was just as insistent that we all meet and as soon as possible. We pulled into her house on Main Street, walked into her sun porch, and were promptly greeted with a loud, “Heeey, Honey!” I knew right away that Ma Mae was indeed someone who was going to be worth knowing. She still is. And she turns 99 tomorrow. This is just a Happy Birthday note.

Morning Musing: Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

So far this week we have talked about freedom, bees, and the good old days. This has given us the chance to reflect on honoring those who have sacrificed to give us what we enjoy, evidence for God’s existence, and gratitude. Today, let’s see if we can put all of those together into a single idea. This all comes compliments of a visit to what I think is the only World War I Memorial and Museum in the world. It’s at the very least the largest and the best. Let’s reflect for just a few minutes today on the gift of those who came before us.

Morning Musing: Exodus 23:20-22

“I am going to send an angel before you to protect you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and listen to him. Do not defy him, because he will not forgive your acts of rebellion, for my name is in him. But if you will carefully obey him and do everything I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

The idea of angels is a pretty rich and varied one in human religious history. Nearly every culture has stories of angels in some form or fashion. Angels themselves are portrayed in all sorts of ways. And indeed, the Scriptures present angels in several different forms. Each kind seems to have a different role in the administration of God’s kingdom. Here, in the concluding statement on the first block of law, we find God’s telling the people about an angel that will serve as His representative as they go from Sinai to the Promised land. Let’s talk about a couple of ideas regarding the identity of this angel and the authority God has given to him.
