Morning Musings: Isaiah 55:7

“…let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

I love the last part of this.  When our God pardons us from our sins, we are not just barely forgiven.  He “abundantly pardons” us.  God doesn’t just say, “Well, you didn’t really measure up, but I’ll let you slide in just under the radar.”  No, He wipes our sins away as far as the east is from the west.  He forgives us completely and we are able to stand perfectly clean in His sight. Morning Musings: Genesis 33:4

“But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

One of the interesting things about this story is that while it appears that Esau forgives Jacob, the rest of the history of the relationship between the descendants of the brothers (the nations of Israel and Edom) reveals that it either didn’t really take, was only skin deep, or more likely that the two had already passed enough bitterness toward each other along to their children that the well was poisoned.  Israel and Edom were bitter enemies and the latter was usually the aggressor. Digging in Deeper: Proverbs 24:29

“Do not say, ‘I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done.'”  (ESV)

Do you want to know what one of the most natural expressions to come out of the mouths of humans is?  The very one the writer of this proverb tells us not to say.  This declaration of human justice is totally natural.  It does not need to be taught at all.  And, it begins to manifest itself from a pretty young age. Morning Musings: Jeremiah 3:25

“Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us.  For we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Genuine, heart-felt repentance is tough to do.  It requires a couple of things that we are pretty loathe to give.  It requires first a recognition that we have done something that was not right.  It was wrong, not in an abstract way, but in a way that was deeply personal for us and also for the other people who were affected by it.  This is tough in and of itself.  Often, when we have gotten caught doing something wrong we recognize the abstract, but not the personal.  We are inconvenienced by the attention to our misdeeds, but not truly sorry we did it.  This is the politician’s apology.  In other words, we are more sorry that we got caught than that we did whatever it was we have been caught doing. Morning Musings: Ephesians 6:12

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Does it feel like it is more and more of a battle to be a follower of Jesus in the U.S. these days?  Welcome to life for most of the rest of your brothers and sisters in Christ around the world and throughout history.  Jesus followers have always tended to be more of a persecuted group than not.  This really shouldn’t be much of a surprise either.  Jesus Himself guaranteed it would happen.
