This week we are starting a brand-new teaching series. One of the things I try to do as a preacher is to give my congregation a balance of more topically-driven series that explore one idea throughout the Scriptures, and more textually-driven series that see us working through a single passage of Scripture together. This is going to be one of the latter journeys. For the next four weeks we are going to be working through the record of the Old Testament prophet, Habakkuk. His little book is different from all of the other prophet and speaks to some of the tensions that have been present in every age, including this one. Let’s start this journey together as we see the prophet ask God some hard questions.

Have you ever asked God a hard question? Maybe a better way to ask that is like this: When was the last time you asked God a hard question? There were a lot of people asking God hard questions in 1755 and the next decade or so. Just three days ago in 1755 there was an earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal. A big earthquake. A deadly earthquake. The total loss of life was somewhere between 40,000-50,000 people. The thing so many people struggled so much with in the wake of that particular earthquake was that Portugal was a really Catholic country. Portuguese were on the whole faithful Catholics. It seems like that should have earned them some points with God. At the very least a whole lot of folks were thinking they should have been spared from the worst of it. But, no, the epicenter was there, and it was bad.

Why Do We Suffer?

This week we are in the third part of our teaching series, Confident in the Face of Hard Questions. This will be the most emotionally challenging stop on our journey. This week we are going to tackle the question of why there is suffering in the world created by a supposedly good God. This is a deeply emotional question with intensely personal elements to it. You have perhaps asked this question yourself. You certainly know people who have even if you didn’t know that about them. The answers to this question won’t be easy, but they are good. Let’s dive in together to see what the Scriptures have to say about it.

Why Do We Suffer?

There is a humanitarian crisis unfolding right now in Gaza. There’s an ongoing one in Ukraine. China is still keeping millions of Uyghur Muslims in concentration camps in the Xinjiang Province even though that has dropped out of the news. That is in addition to that nation’s ongoing and vigorous persecution of Christians…who make up a larger percentage of the population than Chinese Communist Party members. Azerbaijan has launched a genocidal effort to exterminate or otherwise forcibly relocate all of the Armenian Christians in a disputed border region between the nations, leading to massive suffering on the part of tens of thousands. Muslims in Pakistan are becoming more and more aggressive in their persecution of Christians in the nation. So are Hindus in India. The two nations don’t like each other, but they both agree that they hate Christians more. A category five Hurricane hit the Pacific coast of Mexico last week from which the recovery efforts have only just begun. A shooter in Maine just last week murdered 18 and injured another 13, some critically. Several people in our own community have had their lives disrupted just recently by unexpected, unwelcome, and scary news that bodes for a very difficult road stretching out in their near future.

Digging in Deeper: Exodus 10:27-29

“But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was unwilling to let them go. Pharaoh said to him, ‘Leave me! Make sure you never see my face again, for on the day you see my face, you will die.’ ‘As you have said,’ Moses replied, ‘I will never see your face again.'” (CSB – Read the chapter)

We’ve danced around this idea several times now over the course of our talking through the various plagues God unleashed on the Egyptians because of Pharaoh’s refusal to let the Israelites go worship in the wilderness. (Have you noticed that a three-day trip to the wilderness to worship God is still all Moses has been asking for and not total emancipation?) Today, it’s time to tackle it head on. This is a deeply uncomfortable idea, but it has been repeated now several times. What does it mean that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart? Did Pharaoh harden his own heart? What is going on here? Let’s see what kind of sense we can make of out this.
