Digging in Deeper: Joshua 5:13-14 Part 1

“When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand.  And Joshua went to him and said to him, ‘Are you for us, or for our adversaries?’  And he said, ‘No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord.  Now I have come.’  And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, ‘What does my lord say to his servant?'”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

When we prepare to fight the battles we are facing, we draw lines and put people on one side or the other.  We look at each person we encounter as either an enemy or an ally.  This is natural.  People have always done it.  But, as Joshua learned here, while we may be able to do this with people, when it comes to the Lord, we must ask a different question: Are we on His side? Morning Musing: Joshua 23:12-13

“For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Have you ever tried clearing a path for the first time?  I haven’t, but before we moved into our new house, we rallied some men from the church to come and help us clear the backyard.  No one had touched it for what was likely several years and it was a mess.  The patch of trees and branches and vines was so thick that you could just barely see through to the land behind us.  It took the group of us several hours, several chainsaws, a tractor, and two different days, but we got it done.  With all the mess and poison ivy (which I discovered the hard way I can get…twice) now gone, it’s well on its way to be a great space.  Eventually.  I can’t imagine how much work it would have been to have tried doing all that work on my own. Digging in Deeper: Joshua 3:8

“And as for you, command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.'”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

This has always struck me as one of the more remarkable stories in the Exodus narrative.  Here were Joshua and the people of Israel ready once again to cross the Jordan and enter the Promised Land.  The bounty of God’s provision and promise lay ahead of them.  The only thing that stands in their way is the Jordan River.  But, this should present no real trouble to them.  After all, God had already parted a whole sea for them.  What threat does a river pose? Be Ready to Stand

This week we begin a brand new series called Stand Up: How to Fight Injustice.  For the next six weeks and with the story of Esther as our guide, we are going to look at how as followers of Jesus we can stand effectively against injustice in the world around us.  Sometimes we’ll be called to do that in big, bold ways, but more often than not, our best chances will be small and seemingly insignificant.  But, if we don’t make them, injustice is given that much more space to flourish, so make them we must.  Stay tuned in the weeks ahead for how to do it.

Be Ready to Stand

Have you ever heard the word “serendipity” before?  I’m sure you have.  Better question: Do you know what it means?  You might know it was the title of a romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.  That doesn’t really answer the question, though.  Serendipity is a word used to describe a random, but fortunate turn of circumstances.  In other words, serendipity is when something good happens to you totally unexpectedly.  The idea is that the universe has contrived to bless you in some kind of a way without your realizing it.  Now, this is not a concept that connects with the Christian worldview at all.  As followers of Jesus, we believe that God is the giver of all good gifts, not some impersonal entity such as “the universe.”  But, many people don’t have a category for something like this happening because they don’t have the proper worldview framework and so they simply call it serendipity.
