Digging in Deeper: 1 Corinthians 15:6-7

“Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”‬‬ (CSB – Read the chapter) 

Why make such a big deal about the resurrection? Isn’t it enough to simply believe it happened and not worry so much about whether it was a real, historical event? I mean, in a world of modern understandings of life and death, defending the supernatural is no mean feat. Couldn’t we get by simply focusing on the powerful idea of the resurrection? Ever wondered anything like this? Let’s talk about it.

Digging in Deeper: Acts 4:1-2

“While they were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them, because they were annoyed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.”‬‬ (CSB – Read the chapter) 

Why do you believe in Jesus? Maybe that’s a bit too forward for an opening question. Maybe you don’t believe in Jesus—no judgment here. But, what do you believe about Jesus? If you’ve ever even thought about Jesus before, what possessed you to do so? Why is His name something anyone is still talking about today?

Building on the Right Foundation

Happy New Year! As we begin this new year, let’s take a few minutes to take stock of our lives and the job we’re doing at building them. Are we building on the kind of foundation that will last and carry us into the future, or are we building on something that’s going to give us trouble down the road? In this message we glean some of the wisdom of Jesus and His brother, James, to give us some guidance on getting this right.

Building on the Right Foundation

When Noah was a baby, he liked to shove balls around the house like any little boy does.  Well, the house we happened to be living in at the time was actually really good for this.  If you went to the little hallway right in the middle of the house and rolled a ball toward the bathroom door, just as it got to the door it would slow down…and start rolling back toward you.  The house came equipped with its own automatic ball return.  It was like living in a bowling alley!  We just had to set him in the floor there with a ball and he could entertain himself.  It was great!  Well…sort of.

Morning Musing: James 1:25

“But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

As far as their historical worth goes, the Scriptures have a value that exceeds any other work of literature.  They have had more of an impact on human history in terms of shaping and forming the guiding assumptions of people than every other book combined.  The King James Version alone has had more of an impact on the English language than Shakespeare did.  Simply knowing and understanding the Scriptures without caring two wits about the God they reveal is important if you want to be a well-cultured individual.  But, if you want the real blessing they have to offer, you have to go beyond that to committing yourself to doing what they say. Morning Musing: James 5:7

“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.  See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

James advises patience here until the coming of the Lord Jesus.  Now, many people think about patience as a mostly idle waiting for something to happen.  We want something to do while we wait.  We don’t really practice patience today anymore.  Instead, we practice being distracted by entertainment so we don’t have to think about the fact that we can’t have something else we want immediately.
