“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.” (ESV – Read the chapter)
Israel was always intended to serve as an invitation to the rest of the world to come and be a part of the people of God. They were to be a light for the nations. Unfortunately, they never quite managed to do that with anything resembling consistency. They got close under David and Solomon, but never other than that. Read the rest…
In this past Sunday’s installment of A Word on Reality, we paused with John to be reminded once again how we can know what’s true and what’s not. In a world that is awash in different voices claiming to have the corner of the truth market, how do we figure out which voices are worth heeding and which are to be tossed out with the garbage? If I were to ask you what the fastest growing religious affiliation in this country is according to recent survey data, what would you guess it to be? Let’s take a look at the broad categories starting with the group “religious, Christian.” From 1990-2008 the number of adults identifying themselves as part of a mainline Christian denomination (most Methodists, Presbyterians, Episcopals, Lutherans, and the like) in the U.S. shrank by about 10%, or a total loss of 3.5 million members. The number of Baptists grew by about 6% or a little over two million people. Folks identifying themselves as either Pentecostals or simply nondenominational of some sort grew by 40% and 25%, respectively. And, just to round things out, the number of Catholics grew about 25%, although most of that was from immigration, not conversion. Read the rest…
“The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around. His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.” (ESV – Read the chapter)
We work very hard to make the Lord relatable for people. We talk about Jesus and how God wants to be our friend. We delight in His coming near and giving us the gift of His presence. All of this is right and good and true.
But, we cannot forget along the way that God is also holy. He is mighty. He is powerful beyond our imagination. He is glorious, and not in the loudly-singing-angels kind of way. He is glorious in the shine-you-out-of-existence kind of way. His glory is fearsome and terrible. Were we to behold it we would come to an end. Read the rest…
Last night I had the pleasure of being invited to speak at the revival service of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Wayne, Trent, and the family there were exceedingly gracious and the good folks of FBCO offered an overwhelming and humbling show of support. In the message I talked about the major solution to the major problem of the world. To see what it is and what it means for how we do church keep reading.
Contagious Holiness
It is a good day to be a fan of comic book and superhero fare. Never in the whole history of the silver screen or the small screen have we had as many offerings featuring one comic book storyline or another. And it’s not just that the volume is high. The quality is great too. The comics giants Marvel and DC are in a growing competition for audience loyalty and while Marvel has so far dominated the games, the level of excellence they have achieved has set a high bar that DC is doing their best to clear which in turn simply spurs Marvel on to keep upping their own game. Well, for a fan of this genre, the net result of this is a ton of great movies and tv shows to enjoy. Read the rest…
