Songs of the Season: Luke 2:13-14

“Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!'” (CSB – Read the chapter)

This is the final Friday of the season of Advent which means this is our final song of the season. I have been especially drawn this year back to the traditional Christmas carols when I have listened to Christmas music. There’s certainly an element of nostalgia there. Hearing and singing songs that remind me of good times in the past is heartwarming. I suspect you’re not so different from me in that regard. But the other reason I have been drawn back to those old songs in recent years is that I have become more and more aware of just how great are the truths those old songs proclaim. Many of those old carols make declarations and observations about Jesus that are deep and profound. By packaging such truths in wildly repeatedly forms, they have served as vehicles to help a culture that is awash in secularism to not lose sight entirely of what the season is really all about. Let’s talk for a few minutes this morning about Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

It is time once again for what has become one of my favorite annual traditions on here: Songs of the Season. Each year during the season of Advent I take time each Friday to share with one some of my favorite songs of the season. One of the richest parts of the Advent season are the many songs we sing to celebrate the birth of our Savior. In fact, Christmas songs in general are one of the most cherished parts of this time of year for many people whether they are sacred or secular. I defy you to find another season with as many songs dedicated to its celebration as this one (and with several new ones being added to the library each year). You can’t do it because there isn’t. And so, without further ago, let’s get to our first song of this season: Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery.

Morning Musing: Romans 5:8

“But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

I occasionally get things wrong. Okay, let’s be more honest than that. Occasionally I blow it. Okay, fine, scratch that “occasionally.” I screw up a lot. Sometimes this happens in ways that are small and insignificant. Others are big and bold. Some of these are public where anyone can see them. A whole lot more are things known only to my heart and mind and borne by my soul alone. No matter what form or fashion these happen to take, though, one thing is consistent throughout: God’s love never changes or wavers. Today, I am grateful for this unbelievable truth.
