The Gifts of Advent: Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Here we are in the season of Advent. This is a season known for many things. I don’t know that I have the time to even try to list out most of them. But one of the things that sits prominently on the list is gift-giving. I suspect that you will spend more time this month than you care to admit racing around trying to find the perfect thing to give to a special someone. In that spirit, as we journey through this Advent season together this year, I thought we might give some attention to some of the gifts God gives us to help us get the most out of this time; the gifts God gives to help us learn to live more fully in His kingdom. Today, we’ll talk about one gift that is perhaps our most needed by the time we get through it: rest.

Morning Musing: Romans 3:9-10

“What then? Are we any better off? Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin, as it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one.'” (CSB – Read the chapter)

One of my boys is working on a project for school right now in which he has to write a research paper and create a presentation about a mythical character. Specifically, he has to write about one of the Greek gods. This was very exciting for me to learn because I greatly enjoyed reading all the various stories about Greek gods and heroes. As far as figures to look up to for how you should be doing life, they were all awful, but in terms of sheer entertainment value, they were great. I think that is part of what has made this particular set of myths so enduring. This is the last Friday before we officially enter into the season of Advent. With that in mind, and to get us ready for where we are going to go starting this Monday, I want to take just a minute today to talk about one of the most enduring myths in our culture today. Let’s talk today about the myth of the good person.

Morning Musing: Exodus 16:35-36

“The Israelites ate manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. They ate manna until they reached the border of the land of Canaan. (They used a measure called an omer, which held two quarts.)” (CSB – Read the chapter)

It is amazing how fast things change. I was talking with a friend the other day about that. As he was buying a drink from a vending machine using only his smart watch, he observed that if you had told him six years ago he would be able to do something like that, he would have laughed at you. And he’s a pretty young guy. We develop incredible and new things and get rid of old ones at a breathtaking pace. The thought of something happening consistently for a long time is increasingly becoming an odd one to us. Yet the God we serve is patient in His faithfulness. As we wrap up Exodus 16 today, let’s talk about how we see that here, and why it matters so much for us today.

Morning Musing: Romans 5:8

“But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

I occasionally get things wrong. Okay, let’s be more honest than that. Occasionally I blow it. Okay, fine, scratch that “occasionally.” I screw up a lot. Sometimes this happens in ways that are small and insignificant. Others are big and bold. Some of these are public where anyone can see them. A whole lot more are things known only to my heart and mind and borne by my soul alone. No matter what form or fashion these happen to take, though, one thing is consistent throughout: God’s love never changes or wavers. Today, I am grateful for this unbelievable truth.

Morning Musing: Proverbs 18:22

My bride and I have been watching a show lately about living in Alaska. It came out several years ago when shows featuring all things Alaskan were so popular. This one chronicles the lives and lifestyles of a collection of people who live near or north of the Arctic Circle. At least two of the ones who get the most attention are single. One is a woman who lives entirely on her own. The other is a guy who lives with only his dogsledding dogs. From the editing, they pretty much do everything for and by themselves. Watching it is a good reminder of another thing I’m thankful on this Thanksgiving day. Today I am thankful for not doing life alone.
