Morning Musings: Proverbs 20:4

“The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing.”  (ESV)

One of the principles that comes out over and over again in the proverbs is the importance of working hard.  Being lazy and relying on others to work for you is not the way to life.

While many today have internalized the mantra that they are “working for the weekend,” and that the real goal of life is to be able to relax and pursue a life of ease (often in retirement), the Scriptures proclaim a different approach.   Read the rest…

Morning Musings: Proverbs 19:17

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.”  (ESV)

Have you ever wasted money and you knew it?  That’s a frustrating feeling.  Maybe it isn’t at the time (or else you probably wouldn’t have done it!), but eventually that little nagging sense of regret develops and you have to decide you’ll ignore it or else find a way to make amends.   Read the rest…

Morning Musings: Proverbs 18:13

“If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” (ESV)

How many times have you watched a talking heads program as the two (or more) guests responded to what each other was saying almost as if they hadn’t heard them at all?  The fact is, a lot of the times they haven’t.  They come ready with their list of talking points and are committed to firing those off regardless of what the other person has said.  Those shows may attract some audiences for the spectacle of it, but not for the news they offer.  It’s really embarrassing.   Read the rest…
