What’s the secret to the good life? That’s something we all wonder about from time to time. We may not ask it out loud, but it’s rumbling around in our heart and mind. We do the things we do because we believe those actions will lead us to life and flourishing. But inside we wonder: Are these the things that will get us there? Well, while the Scriptures were not written specifically to answer that question, if we pay close attention, sometimes—like right here—they give us a pretty good clue to the answer.

God’s Got You

This past Sunday was Graduate Recognition Sunday. From preschool to masters degree, we recognized and celebrate our many students and the grand things they have accomplished. Then, when it came time for the sermon, I offered the following as a challenge and encouragement. Thanks for reading.

God’s Got You

Do you remember learning how to ride a bike?  I actually still do.  For whatever reason that particular day is seared in my memory.  If you think about it, other than walking, learning to ride a bike is one of the most significant accomplishments a kid can achieve.  The reason is freedom.  There’s something about being on a bike that brings a sense of freedom few other things allow.  As you push the pedals with your own two feet, you are able to power yourself to go anywhere.  You don’t have to rely on your parents to get you there—within reason anyway.  And when you’re pedaling away, with the air rushing past you, you can feel yourself moving.  With every push of your legs, you are moving yourself more and more in some direction.  Even if it’s just to the end of the neighborhood, you’ve gotten there.  All by yourself.

Morning Musing: Psalm 139:14

“I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well.” (Psalm 139:14 – Read the chapter)

Sometimes you find yourself in the midst of a moment you weren’t expecting to experience. Now, technically, every second of our lives is a moment, but that’s not what I mean. I’m talking about a true moment; one of those times when the world gets a glimpse at reality in a way no one can ignore. I found myself there Wednesday night while watching the season premier of season 14 of America’s Got Talent.

Digging in Deeper: Psalm 78:5-7

“He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;”‬‬ (ESV – Read the chapter)

What are you teaching your children? Because the fact is, you are teaching them something. Every single thing you do is teaching them to look at and interact with the world in a certain way. Everything. From the way you dress to how you talk to them to how to talk to their mother to the work you do to your attitude about that work to the kind of hobbies you have to how much time you spend with that hobby to all the rest. The real question is not whether we are teaching our children, but if we are teaching them by intention or by accident.

Morning Musing: Psalm 30:5

“For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.”‬‬ (ESV – Read the chapter)

Have you ever had something done to you that made you mad and you stayed mad for a good long while? It was bad enough that you just stewed over it…for days…weeks even? Or maybe flip that situation around: Have you ever done something that made someone else mad and they stayed mad at you for a long time? Have you ever felt like this other person was God? It’s awful living with someone who’s made at you. Fortunately, anger has a shelf life. Let me explain what I mean.
