This week we take another step forward in our journey to the cross with Mark. In this next part of the story, things begin really heating up. The plot to arrest Jesus and put Him to death is beginning to take shape. Yet in the midst of all of these things, Jesus is patiently, steadily moving forward to bring God’s plans to completion. There’s a lesson there for us. Let’s dig in together and see what it is.

Faithfulness in the Face of Unfairness

I want you to think about a time when something happened to you that you knew in your bones wasn’t right. Whatever this was completely justified every thought you’ve ever had that the world really is out to get you. You were just minding your own business, not bothering anybody, and from out of nowhere, your whole world blew up. What did you say in that moment? My guess is that it was some version of, “That’s not fair!”

Digging in Deeper: Mark 14:17-19

“When evening came, he arrived with the Twelve. While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me – one who is eating with me.’ They began to be distressed and to say to him one by one, ‘Surely not I?'” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Have you ever betrayed anyone’s trust? I’m not talking about lying to another person. That particular sin is on all of our balance sheets. I’m talking about actively betraying another person. They trusted you to do something that would advance their interests in some way and instead, you acted in a manner that intentionally did the opposite. They trusted you to be a certain type of person because you led them to believe as much, but the truth is you never were, and eventually they found out. That’s a pretty terrible place to be. If you’ve been there, you know the heavy weight of emotion and guilt you bear for it. Now, imagine that you haven’t done something like that, but someone tells you that you will. How are you feeling now? That’s where the disciples found themselves quite unexpectedly on the night of what would be their last supper with Jesus. Let’s talk about it.

As we come to the final part of our conversation about how to love like Jesus, this morning we’re taking a look at one more example of Jesus’ love so we can understand it better. We know that loving like Jesus is important. We know that it requires both grace and truth. But how exactly do we get the one another part right. This story answers that question. I like getting what I want. Don’t you? That’s just a sign things are going like they should be going. You’ve perhaps had those days before when everything was falling into place just like you envisioned it would go. Those are good days. You know what I don’t like? Not getting what I want. Anyone with me? Have you ever not gotten what you wanted? That’s more of the rule for how life goes than the other way, isn’t it? What really creates a conundrum for us, though, is when you getting what you want and me getting what I want are mutually exclusive outcomes. In that kind of a situation, what are we most likely to pursue? Well, if we’re being honest, it’s probably going to be our own interests. Why? Because we want what we want more than we want what somebody else wants. If we wanted what somebody else wanted, it wouldn’t be what somebody else wanted, it would be what we wanted and there would be no problem. But when it’s not? Well, that’s where things can get tricky.

Morning Musing: Luke 22:19-20

“And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.'” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Have you ever been in a moment, but didn’t realize you were in a moment? What I mean is, have you ever been somewhere at a time that was really significant, but you didn’t realize it in the moment you were there? That’s what happened to the disciples on the night of the Last Supper. They were in a moment that would change the world almost as much as what would happen the next day, but they didn’t have a clue it was happening.
