One time on a retreat in the mountains I went for a hike. Now, I had been hiking before, but this was the first time I had done any real hiking. Morning Musings: Psalm 142:1

“With my voice I cry out to the Lord; with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.” (ESV – Read the chapter)

This is one of those psalms to pray when the wheels have fallen off the thing and nothing is going your way. The context note tells us that it was a prayer of David’s when he was in the cave. That alone gives us some hope that this is a good prayer for hopeless-seeming situations even without any of the other words. Read the rest…

God wants to be close to us. There is no one so low who is yet seeking God to whom He is not as close as their next breath. Although He is the high and exalted God, yet He is near to us. He is transcendent, yes, but He is also immanent. Read the rest…

Morning Musing: Psalm 135:15-18

“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them.” (ESV – Read the chapter)

In the ancient world, idols were obvious. Someone who worshipped an idol would often literally bow down before a statue. He would make sacrifices before a big hunk of carved rock or wood or shaped metal. They were things made by human hands. Today…not so much. But, just because idolatry is more difficult to spot doesn’t meant the reality of it is any different. Read the rest…
