We live in a rage culture today, don’t we? With the echo chamber effect created by social media, the smallest offense can get all whipped up into a senseless frenzy. Politicians seem to campaign with the intent of getting their supporters angry. After all, if they’re angry, they’re more likely to be motivated to go out and do something about their anger like vote. But here’s a question that we don’t seem to stop and think about nearly as often as we probably should: Is all this anger actually solving any problems? Read the rest…

Morning Musing: 2 Samuel 11:26-27

“When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.”  (ESV – Read the chapter) ‬‬

If the story of David and Bathsheba were a horror film, this would be the part of the movie when the main character thinks he has defeated the monster and breathes a big sigh of relief. Just when we think the climax has passed and we’re on to the denouement, though, the ominous music swells and we see the monster’s hand burst through the pile of stuff under which it was buried. Morning Musing: 2 Samuel 11:10-11

“When they told David, ‘Uriah did not go down to his house,’ David said to Uriah, ‘Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?’ Uriah said to David, ‘The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.’”  (ESV – Read the chapter) ‬‬

There’s nothing so much like righteousness to reveal sinfulness for just how ugly it really is. David had raped a man’s wife—this man’s wife—and now he’s trying to get Uriah to unwittingly help him cover up his evil deed. But Uriah just won’t play along no matter how hard David tries. And the harder David tries to cover his sinfulness with Uriah’s righteousness, the worse he looks and the deeper into it he falls. Read the rest…

Morning Musing: 1 Samuel 4:18

“As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy.  He had judged Israel forty years.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

A couple of things stand out here to me. This verse is an indictment of Eli as well as a commentary on how tragic his family situation was. Both of these are things we want to avoid being said about us. Read the rest…

“As soon as the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Do you remember a time as a kid when you were misbehaving, knew it, but weren’t doing anything about it? You just kept right on down that path figuring that you’d deal with the consequences when that time came. And eventually, the time did indeed come. Your parent or teacher or some other authority finally caught you and sat you down and basically said, “You’ve had your fun, but what were you thinking? Now it’s time to pay the Piper.” Read the rest…
