Morning Musings: Jeremiah 1:5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Our culture is increasingly divided over the issue of abortion.

Although there is little debate left over the identity of the unborn from the standpoint of science, still there are those who insist that it be absolutely legal in all circumstances and for any reason to put to death the unique human person developing in the womb.  The reasons for this insistence vary, but they are all either variations on the theme of why killing an unborn human person is morally permissible, or else they are denials of the clear testimony of embryologists that the unborn is in fact a human person from moment one.

While a great deal more can be (and has been) said on this subject, allow me to let a simple observation suffice for now: In the Scriptures we see only affirmations of what modern science has affirmed over and over again.  God knew Jeremiah before he was in the womb.  He had plans for him before he was born.  If God has plans for a person when they are still in the womb–before they are in the womb even–then we dare not seek to thwart those plans for any reason.
