“Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it.” (ESV)
I love what this is saying here. When it comes to the promises of God, we don’t have some beta version of a program that doesn’t yet have all the bugs worked out of it. We have something that was not only true and reliable from the start because of its source, but something that has also been tested and tried by hundreds of millions of users along the way.
We don’t have to worry that in striving to keep God’s laws we are going to find out along the way they are somehow insufficient to the task of righteousness. We don’t have to fear that His promises will be unable to complete the work of salvation. There are volumes and volumes of testimonies to the fact that they work precisely as advertised.
That means we can pursue the way of Jesus with confidence. We can love others without fear. We can give generously without worrying whether we’ll have enough when it’s all said and done. We can pursue justice trusting that it will ultimately be served. We can deny ourselves knowing that our reward will be great. We can give ourselves wholly over to the way of Jesus without any reservations because it is assuredly the way that leads to life. There is no other road in which we can have such confidence. Let us commit ourselves to this one which has been tested and proven true over and over and over again.
